Payback calculator

2 min read · By Hoardsy

Put in any competition’s ticket price, ticket total and prize list. You’ll see what share of the money paid in comes back as prizes, and your chance of winning anything per ticket.

Prize value (£)How many
Payback 70.0%£2,000 in, £1,400 out, £600 kept. 1 in 38.5 tickets wins something.

How to read it

The chance calculation assumes each winning ticket receives one listed prize. £0 rows do not count as wins.

Payback is the prizes ÷ the money in at a full sell-out. A site that returns 40% keeps 60p of every £1. A site that returns 80% keeps 20p. The top prize can look the same in both.

Check the inputs

  • Use every prize on the list, not just the headline.
  • Use the ticket total the site publishes. If it won’t say, that tells you something.
  • Cash alternatives count at the cash value you’d actually get.

Why we built it

Plenty of competition sites don’t show payback. Hoardsy shows the prizes and your chance on every competition page. Read what payback means and see how results are checked.
